31 Marks of a Relational Leader

Last May I had the privilege of delivering a plenary address to 700 Christian leaders from throughout Europe. The video of this address was just released on the web by the Forum of Christian Leaders, along with an outline detailing the 31 marks of a relational leader.

If you are in a leadership position of any kind—in your home, church, ministry, business or community—I hope these resources will inspire and lead you toward a more relational leadership style.

If you are not in a position of leadership, you will still find most of these principles to be directly applicable to the relationships of your daily life.

I hope you will also look for opportunities to share these concepts with leaders you know and pray that God would give them grace to imitate the most relational leader the world has ever known, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection Questions:

  • Which of these leadership qualities to you appreciate and value the most in leaders who impact your life? Why?
  • Which of these qualities are you weakest in? How does that weakness impact the people around you?
  • Think of a leader who would appreciate these principles … and send this post to him or her.
  • If you’d like to develop these qualities in your life, take a look at our new Discovering Relational Wisdom 2.0 course, which you can study individually or with a group, online or in person.

I’ve hired many people … and fired only a few. My best co-workers thrived because of three key character qualities. The disappointing ones struggled because they lacked the very same qualities. I’ve noticed an identical dynamic in friendships, marriages and...

Spanglish

Today’s movie clip is one of my favorites. It illustrates several key relational skills, including empathy, self-control, and the use of perceptive questions rather than forceful arguments. The clip is taken from the movie, Spanglish. Its central character, Flor, is a...

The Golden Result

We all know the Golden Rule: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” But do you know the Golden Result? “Other people will usually treat you the way you treat them.” Not always, but usually. Because that’s how our brains are wired. Here is a short movie clip...
